The funeral ceremony of the former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Fetus Iyayi, began on Wednesday, in Benin, Edo State, with a solidarity march by members of the ASUU and civil society groups.
Members from University of Benin branch of ASUU were joined by hundreds of their colleagues from University of Ilorin, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma and the Delta State University, Abraka.
Other groups represented included Nigeria Labour Congress, Conference of Non-Governmental Organisations, Joint Action Front and Parents Consultative Association of Nigerian Universities, among others.
The march, which began at about 10am, covered five kilometers of walk to the residence of the late professor of Business Administration, on Bello Street, off the Benin-Lagos Expressway.
Addressing the people at the residence of the late former ASUU president, ASUU-UNIBEN chairman, Dr. Tony Monye-Emina, described Iyayi as one of the country's leading light that had fallen, and a hero of ASUU struggles.
He said the march was the beginning of activities to mark the home journey of the late professor.
